Learn more about what we do

Our team is fun, creative, and dedicated to making a difference every day in the lives of the individuals we serve. The heart of what we do is support individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities of all ages, caring when others cannot.

We welcome volunteers looking to satisfy court ordered community service requirements as long as the alleged offense is not listed on our Affidavit of Good Moral Character. Due to limitations of staff, we cannot agree to communicate with probation officers and we cannot appear at court hearings. We do, however, provide documentation of hours served and will sign paperwork authorizing hours and service.

Reception and Administration

Reception desk volunteers serve as an immediate representation of Michael Hearts Academy by being the first face that both residents and visitors see. Duties include answering phones, greeting and directing visitors and volunteers to their destinations, and overseeing the mail delivery system. Administrative volunteers may assist staff members by organizing, filing and shredding documents, typing, or other duties.

Group Volunteers

Engage your team in a meaningful volunteer experience while making a positive impact in our community. The Camp will customize a project based on your availability, interests, and group size. Opportunities include holiday parties and special events, recreational and arts/crafts activities, beautification projects, and skill-based workshops.

Club Hearts

Club Hearts is a social club hosted on Friday nights in Community Center. The disco ball located in the dining room goes down, the music turns up, and the party starts! Volunteers help with running the DJ booth, registration, serving food, and engaging with party goers.

Recreational/ Fitness Sessions

Volunteers direct recreational activities such as football, yoga, swimming, or basketball. Opportunities can be created based on the volunteer’s background and interests. Zumba is a favorite among our clients and we are always looking for instructors! Opportunities can be created based on the volunteer’s background. This opportunity is available at all locations and at group homes.

Teaching Sessions

Volunteers direct small group sessions or educational presentations on various topics including music, dance, crafts, foreign language and ASL, cooking and nutrition, finances, etc. If you have a skill or knowledge base that you would like to share, please inform the Volunteer Coordinator.

There are many internship opportunities at Michael Hearts Academy, in various departments: Accounting, Mental Health, Non- Profit Management, Social Services, and more. Internships are to be coordinated well in advance to semester start, so please reach out early!
